Hello! My name is Alyssa Cohen and my company, Sona is a dream come true. You're probably wondering what Sona means, so I will get that right out of the way! Sona is Gaelic for prosperity and good fortune- a nod to my Irish heritage that I am very proud of.
I will never forget the moment I decided to break away from my career in health care and realize my dream of working with families on my own. It is my passion to help seniors and families navigate the complex world of aging. Other than enjoying my family and gardening, there is nothing in the world that I enjoy more than to empower seniors to age gracefully.
I made the decision early on that I wanted to work with seniors. It was an easy decision to make because seniors have been a huge part of my entire life and I truly love working with this generation. I grew up in a nursing home- well, not really, but I have been deeply ingrained in the world of seniors since I was born. My mother, a wonderful and talented nurse, has worked at this same nursing home since I was 3 months old (and still does!). I went to daycare there, got my first job as a data entry clerk, and furthered much of my career there for 17 years with my last position being Director of Admissions, before I decided to follow my heart and dreams and start Sona.
It wasn't my only stop along the way, though. I am a Certified Senior Advisor®, which is a designation earned through the Society of Certified Senior Advisors. Earning the CSA certification requires individuals to pass a rigorous exam and to uphold the highest ethical standards for the benefit and protection of the health and welfare of seniors. CSAs are multidisciplinary professionals who have demonstrated advanced knowledge in the multiple processes of aging. I have experience in multiple areas including hospitals, Geriatric Behavioral Health, Dermatology, Home Care and Care Management. My experience in multiple areas of geriatric care and working with many different families has afforded me the opportunity to understand the many facets of aging, provide solutions to problems, refer for services and offer the best support. It's also allowed me to meet the best providers in the business who specialize in services for seniors ranging from home health, home safety renovations, skilled nursing facilities and more.
It is extremely important for me to understand who my seniors are, as well as who their families are. No two people nor are all circumstances alike, and every person and family has their own unique set of personalities, preferences, challenges and goals. Knowing who my families are enables me to provide personalized solutions so that together, we can improve the safety and the quality of life for your loved one and you.
I firmly believe that everyone should know their options before they are in a critical situation. Knowledge is power. While we will address the crisis at hand, it is also very important to look at the whole picture and find out what led to the crisis. We define the root cause, and formulate a plan to address it.
I know how overwhelming this can be. I've been there, too with my own family. My ultimate goal is to empower you, provide you with education and resources and provide you the support and advocacy you need. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve you and your family.
